Abdulnasser Gharem, Al Siraat (Video Still), 2007
Gisteren is bekend gemaakt dat het Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) twee kunstwerken van hedendaagse Saoedische kunstenaars heeft toegevoegd aan de collectie. Het gaat om de werken Illumination (Ottoman Waqf) van Ahmed Mater en Al Siraat (video) van Abdulnasser Gharem. Bijzonder aan deze aanwinsten is dat het Nederlandse Greenbox Museum ook al in het bezit is van meerdere werken van deze Saoedische kunstenaars, waaronder Al Siraat van Gharem en andere Illuminations van Ahmed Mater.
Volgens Arabnews is het bijzonder dat deze werken van Mater en Gharem in de collectie van het LACMA zijn opgenomen. Dit zou namelijk de eerste keer zijn dat een vooraanstaand Amerikaans museum hedendaagse Saoedische kunstenaars in de permanente collectie opneemt. Het LACMA heeft de werken gekocht naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling “Gifts of the Sultan: The art of giving in Islamic courts” die nog tot en met 5 september in het LACMA te zien is.

De directeur van het LACMA, Michael Govan, is opgetogen met de nieuwe aanwinsten en zei hierover: “I first encountered contemporary Saudi art during a trip to Riyadh in January, 2010, when I had the opportunity to see Edge of Arabia in its initial iteration. I was deeply impressed by what I saw and also by what I heard from the artists themselves. At the time, I thought that Abdulnasser Gharam’s Al-Siraat and one of Ahmed Mater’s Illuminations would make wonderful additions to LACMA’s collection. I am therefore delighted that one year later both artists are represented at LACMA. We are especially grateful for the gift of Ahmed Mater’s Illumination Dyptich (Ottoman Waqf), which was made expressly for us and looks to be one of the finest examples in this series.”
