In Bristol (Groot-Brittannië) is dit weekend het “See No Evil” street art project gestart. Dit is naar verluidt één van de grootste ‘open-air urban art exhibitions’ ter wereld. 70 street artists van over de hele wereld hebben afgelopen week alle gebouwen in Nelson Street onder handen genomen en het resultaat is vanaf dit weekend te bewonderen.
Het evenement is tot stand gekomen door een samenwerking tussen street artist Inkie, muziek promotors Team Love en de gemeente Bristol. Het idee om een hele straat in Bristol door street artists met veelal monumentale kunstwerken te laten beschilderen en beplakken is afkomstig van een project dat in Melbourne plaatsvond en maar liefst 400,000 bezoekers naar de stad trok. Natuurlijk hoopt de gemeente dat dit ook in Bristol het geval zal zijn, zeker na het succes van de Banksy tentoonstelling die twee jaar geleden in de stad gehouden werd (en die de stad 15 miljoen pond opleverde).

Gemeente Bristol gebruikt street art dus als marketingmiddel om meer bezoekers te trekken en volgens organisator en marketeer Mike Bennett zal dit evenement (geopend met een groots feest) bezoekers naar de stad blijven trekken: “I think the aim of this is to try to continue the promotion of Bristol as an incredibly creative city. It’s hard to come up with hard data but we want this to be a tourist destination in Bristol. But it is going to have some hardcore economic impact, and it seems like we’ve made a really positive start.”
Mede organisator en graffiti artist Inkie vertelt: “We have spent nearly 12 months negotiating and planning this major project, which will be the jewel in the crown of the city’s already buzzing art scene. We have invited some of the world’s most talented graffiti artists to bring their skills to city, and we have a number of returning Bristolians to head up proceedings. Nothing of this size and scale has ever taken place in the UK and it’s an event that has captured the minds of some the world’s most respected street artists. It’s a major coup that we’ve managed to pull this off in Bristol.”
Anderen zoals DJ Die (deelnemer aan het “See No Evil” project) zijn gewoon blij dat de gemeente street artists op een legale wijze de ruimte geeft om zich te kunnen ontwikkelen: “Once they [Bristol City Council] found out Banksy’s cool and he’s one of the world’s greatest artists they soon bought in – but it’s good, welcome it.
