Over de hele wereld zijn er op het moment Occupy demonstraties. Afgelopen weekend stelden demonstranten al hun ‘protestkunst’ tentoon in New York maar met Occupy Museums (Occupy Wall Street Movement) wil een groep demonstranten het grootser aanpakken door zich tegen “cultureel elitisme” en “ intense commercialisatie en coöptatie van kunst” te verzetten bij het MoMA, the Frick Collection en de New Museum.

Deze Occupy groep ziet musea als manifestaties van culturele macht en wil op deze manier bewerkstelligen dat de betreffende musea “open their minds and hearts”. Noah Fischer (organisator van deze nieuwe protestactie) zegt: “The game is up: we see through the pyramid schemes of the temples of cultural elitism controlled by the 1%. No longer will we, the artists of the 99%, allow ourselves to be tricked into accepting a corrupt hierarchical system based on false scarcity and propaganda concerning absurd elevation of one individual genius over another human being for the monetary gain of the elitest of elite. For the past decade and more, artists and art lovers have been the victims of the intense commercialization and co-optation of art. We recognize that art is for everyone, across all classes and cultures and communities. Dit zullen overigens niet de eerste musea zijn die door de Occupy demonstranten wordt ‘bezet’. In Washington werd al een protestmars voor het Air and Space Museum gehouden en in Vancouver protesteerde een Occupy groep voor de Vancouver Art Gallery. Amerikaanse bloggers zijn echter van mening dat musea niet de juiste culturele instanties zijn om te demonstreren tegen commercialisatie in de kunst, beter is het om je hiervoor op belangrijke galeries zoals the Gagosian Gallery te richten.
